With regard to lawyers working in law firms, too, there’s a wide disparity depending on factors such as area of practice, city where the lawyer is based, size of the firm, reputation of the firm and seniority of the lawyer. There are some lawyers working in small law firms in Kolkata who earn as little as Rs 6000 a month, while their counterparts working in Khaitan & Co in the same city earn starting salaries which may even go up to Rs 1,00,000 per month.

Mumbai firms generally pay more, something averaging around Rs 45,000 to 50,000 per month, but then again, Mumbai is a more expensive city to live in, and the ones earning such salaries are usually working in the area of corporate law rather than litigation.

The pay varies wildly, and it’s difficult to arrive at an average pay figure in the legal profession.
